It’s another edition of El Clásico as Barcelona takes on Real Madrid in the 2024 Spanish Supercup Finals. Sunday’s match will air on TV via ABC.

One of world sport's most famous rivalries takes centre stage once again in the latest edition of El Clasico at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, with Spanish Supercopa bragging rights up for grabs.

Real Madrid reached the final of the now four-team competition for the third successive year by outlasting cross-city rivals Atletico 5-3 in an absolute thriller on Wednesday night, while 24 hours later reigning LaLiga champions Barcelona brushed aside last season's beaten Copa del Rey finalists Osasuna thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal.

This is a repeat of last year's showpiece, when Barcelona beat their fiercest rivals 3-1 in Saudi 12 months ago to claim a record-extending 14th Supercopa de Espana title.

Copa del Rey holders Real are currently seven points clear of third-place Barca in the LaLiga title race as they fight hard against surprise package Girona, running out 2-1 winners in the last Clasico at the Camp Nou in October thanks to Jude Bellingham's dramatic second-half double that included a stoppage-time winner.

Here’s what you need to know:

When: Sunday, January 14, 2024

Time: 2 p.m. ET

Where: Al-Awwal Park (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia)

The final for the Spanish Super Cup takes place today with an exciting El Clasico in Saudi Arabia. Both Los Blancos and the Blaugrana enjoyed rather different routes to this fixture but the first trophy of the Spanish season is now just 90 minutes away.

Real came from behind for a thrilling 5-3 win over Atletico Madrid in midweek to book their place, having qualified for the four-team showdown by winning LaLiga last season. Barcelona, meanwhile, made their domination over Osasuna pay via two second-half goals.

The final of the 2023–24 Supercopa de España will feature the biggest rivalry in Spain.

Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet at Al-Awwal Park in Saudi Arabia on Sunday as the competition will end with a midseason Clásico.

Barcelona defeated Osasuna 2-0 win on Thursday in a semifinal, with Madrid getting past city rival Atlético the previous day in a 5-3 extra-time thriller.

The two semifinals set up a repeat of last year’s final, which Barcelona won 3-1. But Madrid has bounced back with consecutive wins over its biggest rival, including a 2-1 win in La Liga in October.

The Supercopa de España features the winners and runners-up of the 2022–23 Copa del Rey and 2022–23 La Liga. It shifted from a two-team tournament to a four-team competition starting in 2019-20, with four of the five events since then being held in Saudi Arabia.

Real overcame their local rivals Atletico Madrid in a thrilling eight-goal classic to book their place in the final, while Barca beat Osasuna with minimum fuss in the other semi-final to set up a mouthwatering decider.

Dani Carvajal has been a doubt for the game but could be available having observed a rest period, while Federico Valverde remains optimistic about playing a part despite being forced off with an injury in the mid-week victory over Atletico.

Thibaut Courtois, of course is a long-term absentee, as are Eder Militao, David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez. Having sparkled since joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, Jude Bellingham remains the key player for Real and they will be hopeful the England international can trouble the scoresheet.

Raphinha is certainly out of the game after picking up a thigh injury in the game against Osasuna. Lamine Yamal is expected to come into the starting XI, having replaced the Brazilian on that occasion, while Pedri is also in line for consideration.

Barcelona are without a host of key players through injury, including Marcos Alonso, Gavi, Marc Andre ter-Stegen, Inigo Martinez, and Joao Cancelo.

Xavi Hernandez secured his first title as Barcelona boss in the 2023 final, with a 3-1 victory over Los Blancos, and the Catalans are aiming to defend their title in the Middle East. Carlo Ancelotti's side stormed into the final on the back of an incredible 5-3 extra-time win over Atletico Madrid in the semifinals as Barcelona overcame Osasuna 2-0 in the other last four tie.

Ancelotti is still without defensive duo David Alaba and Eder Militao with the latter battling to return before the end of the season and Lucas Vazquez has remained in Spain to continue his recovery. Xavi will assess his options ahead of this game with Joao Cancelo and Pedri only just back from injury but Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Lewandowski are set to start.

Both teams come into this game on the back of strong starts to 2024 across all competitions as they look set to also battle it out in the La Liga title race in the months ahead.

Jude Bellingham's double secured a 2-1 La Liga win over Barcelona in Catalonia earlier this season, and Ancelotti's team seem to have a slight edge at the moment, with Barcelona playing catch up in their league title defence.

Real Madrid reached this point with a wild 5-3 win over rival Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal that required equalizing late in the second half to force extra time. Real scored twice in the second 10-minute overtime period to surge into the finals with a little faster pulse and a shot to win the cup for the third time in five years. But according to manager Carlo Ancelotti, it was the type of win that was far more taxing than he hoped it would be.

Barcelona took a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid to win the 2023 Spanish Super Copa and also beat Real, 3-0, in a club friendly back in July. The clubs have also met once thus far in Spanish LaLiga play, which Real Madrid won, 2-1, in October. Barcelona is currently running fourth in LaLiga with a 12-5-2 record and 41 points, while Real Madrid sits atop the league standings with a 15-3-1 record and 48 points.

Longtime La Liga rivals and powerhouses face off in the finals of the Spanish Super Cup. Real Madrid, which currently sits second in the Spanish League standings, comes into the matchup after a victory against local rivals Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Barcelona sits fourth in La Liga. The club advanced to the Super Cup after a 2-0 victory against Osasuna in the semifinals.

Troubled by its erratic form, Barcelona will face a Real Madrid that is playing like a champion-in-the-making in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Osasuna in the semifinals on Thursday was the first time it had won by more than a one-goal margin since September, a run of 20 straight games without a comfortable victory for Xavi Hernández’s side.

“This is the ideal scenario for a player, to play against Madrid with a title at stake,” Xavi, who played 42 times against Madrid as a Barcelona midfielder, said Saturday. “Madrid arrives in a bit better form than we do, I have to be honest. But when the ball starts to roll it is 50-50.”

Madrid has only lost once in 27 games across all competitions this season. The Spanish league leader avenged that sole defeat to Atletico Madrid by beating its crosstown rival 5-3 in extra time in the other Super Cup semifinal on Wednesday.

Barcelona bettered Madrid a year ago in Riyadh in the same final to win its first trophy under Xavi, and the first since the painful exit of Lionel Messi in 2021. Midfielder Gavi Páez led Barcelona by scoring the opener and setting up goals by Robert Lewandowski and Pedri González. Barcelona then went on to win the Spanish league four months later.

Barcelona will have to find a way to beat Madrid without Gavi this time. Gavi, the team’s best tackler, tore his ACL in his right knee in November while playing for Spain.

Gavi was also his team’s best player the last time it faced Madrid in October, when Jude Bellingham scored twice late as Madrid rallied for a 2-1 win in the domestic league.

Xavi declined to reveal in the pre-game news conference whether he would pack his midfield with four players or opt for a three-man attack like he did against Osasuna. The injury to winger Raphinha could prompt him to play with an extra man in midfield, perhaps starting Pedri after he came on as a substitute in the semifinals.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti’s main question will be whether to give the 38-year-old Luka Modric a second consecutive start or leave him as a second-half substitute as he has for most of the season. Toni Kroos could take his place, while Madrid’s attack will likely once again be for Brazilian pair Vinícius Júnior and Rodyrgo.
